Bay or Bow?

The side units are usually casements that crank open; the centre is usually fixed glass. Any of them can be fixed or opening.

The Five Parts of a Bay

Windows. Our tested casement and fixed units, with the glass package you choose.
Seat board. The shelf you sit on, insulated underneath so it doesn’t feel cold.
Headboard. The ceiling inside the bay, also insulated.
Roof or cap. Shingled, metal, or tucked under the eave, sealed into the wall so water can’t get behind it.
Support. Brackets or cables that carry the weight back to the house.

Flat Wall to Bay

You can turn a flat window into a bay or bow, but it changes the outside of the house: the unit projects past the wall and needs its own roof and support. We’ll look at the space outside, the overhang above, and what’s below before recommending it.
